In Nawat Pipil, tentuk means "full, mouth-filling", and that's exactly how this coffee drinks: a creamy body that coats the palate and a long finish that stays with you.
Tasting profile
The producer
Falsir Durán planted his first 2,000 Villa Nueva trees eleven years ago. Today he farms 104 hectares in Mesa de Quintero, 99 of them in coffee, grown under partial shade with a mix of organic and conventional practices. Along the way he has built his own milling, washing and drying facilities, and he opens them to the smallholders around him. He has also given away some four million seeds to other growers in the region.
The place
Los Naranjos sits in the Mocotíes Valley, a long, narrow valley carved by the river of the same name and draining toward Lake Maracaibo. Between the lake and the river, a microclimate has supported high-altitude coffee here since colonial times. The soils are deep and fertile, a balance of sand, lime and clay rich in organic matter.
In the cup
Washed, clean and sweet. Dark chocolate, vanilla and nuts form the base, lifted by cherry and a bright hint of orange, with white pepper on a long, lingering finish.
